Getting a Good Night Sleep is Essential for Good Skin

Your mind and body work hand-in-hand. If you’re not eating right, exercising or sleeping enough; your energy and sharpness can be impacted. So what about your skin? Just like how I always say drink more water for better skin, I should also say go to sleep earlier (I need to take my own advice) for better skin!

If you become sleep-deprived our bodies produce more cortisol, which is a stress hormone that can create inflammation on our bodies/faces (cue acne and psoriasis)! If you practice better sleeping habits, some skin irritations or inflammations could actually subside.

If sleep isn’t included in your #SelfCare routine, these are some things that could happen as a result:

  1. Can make current skin issues worse or make your skin more sensitive/reactive. Ex:If you already have acne, you could probably get more flare ups. More flair ups, means more products, which means more money!

  2. If there is an increased amount of inflammation in the body, this could break down collagen and hyaluronic acid faster. That the stuff that keeps your skin firm. Umm yikes!

  3. Lack of sleep can throw off the immune system, making it harder for your body to fight inflammation/skin irritations.

  4. While sleeping, our bodies are busy re-balancing our hydration by collecting “good” moisture. If we don’t sleep enough, our body’s water retention could be pretty off-balance. Results are: puffy eyes, dark circles, wrinkles, and dry skin.

  5. Another thing that happens while you’re sleeping is our growth hormones repair damage cells. If we don’t get into deep sleep, this wont happen. If cells are not getting repaired, this cell breakdown will continue to build up over time = more signs of aging.

  6. Help your body out, make sure you wash your face before bed. This prevents dirt, oil or pore-clogging debris from the day to further irritate your skin overnight.

So in conclusion, try to get your eight hours of sleep. Have trouble sleeping? Some quick tips that could help relax you before bed.

  • Don’t eat a huge meal late at night

  • Meditation

  • Don’t workout at night

  • Keep phones, tv etc out of the bedroom

  • Breathable sheets

  • CBD

  • Read a book before bed

  • Drinking chamomile tea

  • Get a weighted eye-mask (I have one filled with lavender)
